Cards

Each greeting card is handmade using 80-105# cardstock, and the finest paper. I try to use recycled paper whenever I can. I sign the back of each card twice – once in English, and again using my red Chinese name chop. All of my cards come with coordinating A2 envelopes and are left intentionally blank so you can add your own sentiments. I rarely inscribe the front of a card with a greeting like “Happy Birthday” or “Merry Christmas”, as I would like the cards to serve as many purposes as possible. On special orders, or if buying in person, I am happy to use calligraphy to personalize the inside of your card.

I get the ideas for my cards much like I do for my collages. I am inspired by nature and the seasons, colors, textures and themes. I love using origami paper, as the detail is something that I cannot replicate in my pastels. I started out using multiple scraps of origami and cold press paper, and layering them like a collage, highlighting color and movement. I then started adding leaves that I had collected from here in the Northwest. I dry and varnish them, then adhere them to the card. I also found wonderful “skeleton” leaves from Thailand, kiln-dried from the Bo tree (ficus religiosa).

As a minimalist, I don’t want to use anything that isn’t absolutely necessary to “tell the story”. This is why you will see a lot of single strand ribbons or embroidery floss, a simple punched design in a lower corner, or a raised rectangle in the center of a blank field. Am I being frugal? No. I’m just trying to accentuate the main idea of the card.

Other design elements that have found their way onto my cards are handmade origami cranes, mizuhiki (good luck) knots, Asian images from Japanese woodblocks and Chinese playing cards, shells and tumbled sea glass, beads, braids, kanji stencils, embroidery designs, glitter glue squiggles, and miniature iris fold collages.

As I have so many designs, I offer only a sample here, encouraging you to use your imagination and come up with a color, theme, or pattern for me to customize a special card for you. Some special orders I have done included adding wedding pictures and a monogram for thank you cards, doing calligraphy in Spanish for New Year’s cards, and making a special iris fold Christmas star pattern for holiday cards. Explore and enjoy!
